Google is an important source of potential customers for your business, so here’s a quick SEO tip to help improve how your website performs in search results.
Not sure what SEO means? Read this introductory article: New customers are not finding your website. Learn the basics about SEO and win new customers.
Step 1: Find popular keywords
Identify keywords people would search for when looking for your website. Perhaps it is “accountant London”, “builder Farnborough” or “freelance web designer”.
Clear Books provides “online accounting software” and this is a keyword that people often search for before they find our website.
You can research how popular keywords are using this free tool from Google: https://adwords.google.com/o/KeywordTool
Step 2: Research Google results
Once you have a list of popular keywords, search for them in Google. If I were doing this for Clear Books I would search for “online accounting software”. Google returns all the websites that it thinks are relevant to that keyword in order of priority – that’s exactly what search results are!
Step 3: Make contact
You have a list of websites that Google thinks are really important for your keyword.
Visit each website and dismiss competitors. For websites that are not competitors, find the contact details and fire off a friendly email to ask if that website will link to your website, exchange links or allow you to post a guest article. Nick Bernard wrote great article on how to reach out for a link request.
These links will be really valuable for letting Google know that your website is also related to the particular keyword.
Sceptical whether this actually works? Google online accounting software and see who is number one.
