What is Blog Action Day?
“Blog Action Day is an annual event held every October 15th that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking a global discussion and driving collective action.”
This year Blog Action Day’s campaign is to raise awareness about access to clean drinking water. According to the Blog Action Day website there are “almost a billion people on the planet [who] don’t have access to clean, safe drinking water. That’s one in eight of us who are subject to preventable disease and even death because of something that many of us take for granted.” I was shocked when I heard this figure, to think something as simple as access to clean drinking water results in one in eight people lives being put at risk.
Every day we take this fact for granted, I’m certainly guilty of it myself. When I’m thirsty I just simply turn on the tap, when I wash or shower I turn on the tap, and I turn on the tap to water my plants. We’re so used to water as a convenience rarely do we stop to think just what a luxury it really is. In many parts of the world, men, women and children have to walk miles just to find water. They find it in puddles, ponds and rivers of which are riddled with waste and disease. For them choice is not a luxury, either they drink it and risk their health and possibly even death, or they go thirsty and die of dehydration.
But for just $20 we can help one individual have access to clean, safe drinking water for a whole decade, and with enough help we can make a real difference in eradicating the problem for good.
Clear Books + Blog Action Day 2010
All of us at Clear Books feel strongly about the issues being raised by Blog Action Day which is why we are pleased to announce we shall be backing their efforts to raise awareness and to raise funds to help find a solution to the problem. Starting today in the run up to Blog Action Day 2010 Clear Books pledges to donate £1.00 for every new sign up between October 4th 2010 and October 15th 2010. Come October 15th, we will take part by writing up a blog post and announcing how much we have raised from pledges and user donations.
